East Campus, Part Two

East Campus, Part Two First of all, a big thank you to everyone who replied to my request for feedback in the last entry. :-) I will be creating some in-depth entries about projects as I decide what exactly to write about! In this second post of a three-part series, I will showcase some vacant rooms in the MIT East Campus dormitory, all from the same floor. My objective is to show the typical setup, furniture, and layout of a mix of rooms in the third post, I will show presently occupied and lived-in quarters to give some contrast between the way youll find a room when you move in, and the way things could look a month or a year later. I was able to find empty rooms to photograph because during the summer months, many students choose to go home or pursue summer internships and other opportunities off campus. However, very often a student will leave at the end of the spring semester and choose to come back to the same room in the fall. House management requires the rooms to be vacated unless a student is keeping his or her room for the summer (with applicable rent payment, currently between $1500 and $1800 total). You would have difficulty finding empty rooms during the school year, as EC is a pretty p opular place to live. With this post, I will take the time to clarify something from my last entry: when I said I try to get off campus as much as possible, I didnt mean that I dont like it here! Its just that MIT is located in a vibrant metropolitan area with much to see and do, in a region with many opportunities for travel and exploration. I value my many connections to campus and the activities in which Im involved, and in my entry I simply wished to convey a picture of a lifestyle heavily influenced by factors both internal and external to the Institute. :-) That said, lets see some photos (all taken within the past couple of weeks and yes, its common for freshmen to get single rooms, though not terribly large ones.) In addition, more than a decade of national, state, and local prevention efforts have been minimally effective. It is a major problem that continues to escape our control. Nearly 9 out of 10 high school seniors in America report that they have experimented with alcohol. Within this group, 3 out of 10 report alcohol abuse (defined as the consumption of five or more drinks in a row at least once during the past two weeks). Three out of four teens report a pattern of regular drinking, and more than 100,000 children aged 10 or 11 report that they get drunk once a week.†¦show more content†¦Alcohol experimentation increases from 6 to 17 percent between the fourth and sixth grades In addition to the above pattern of actual use, a time bomb of skepticism and disregard exists in the value system of todays adolescent peer group. Researchers report disbelief among adolescents regarding physiological and psychological dangers associated with substance use. Peer group disapproval of alcohol and other drug use is also decreasing. That is to say, the teens who use and abuse alcohol and other drugs are feeling quite bulletproof. Those peers who are non-users confront abusers less frequently now about both their behaviors and beliefs. The picture painted is not a pretty one. Teens are experimenting with and abusing addictive substances in epidemic proportion, and their primary frame of reference -- other adolescents -- are reinforcing this behavior. The best prevention efforts of schools and communities have not significantly impacted alcohol and other drug use or the belief system that supports continued use for this population. Compounding all of the above is the impact of managed care on treatment opportunities for those teens needing traditional inpatient rehabilitation treatment and reasonable aftercare follow-through. It's Not About School Prayer The question of school prayer has been moved from one of the storage rooms way beyond the wings to somewhere prominently on stage, if not front stage and center. The most important thing about the discussion of a school prayer amendment is not school prayer as such. People of eminently good sense and religious conviction can disagree about whether there should be prayer in public schools and, if so, what kind of prayer and who should be in charge of it. Those decisions should be made by thousands of communities and local school boards across the country. That is called democracy. An amendment is needed not to mandate or even to encourage school prayer but to restore to the people their right and responsibility to deliberate and decide a question that bears upon the kind of education they want for their children. Parents who are serious about the moral and religious formation of their children should have no illusions that adding a prayer at the beginning of the school day will achieve that goal. Public policy should help such parents send their children to schools that share their educational goals. This means school vouchers, education tax credits, flexible charter schools, or other instruments that can enable parents to exercise real choice in education. That, however, does not obviate the need for a school prayer amendment, which might better be called an educational democracy amendment. Quite apart from the merits or demerits of prayer in public schools, an amendment is needed for three reasons. First, it is a necessary check upon the overreach of the imperial judiciary. The school prayer decisions of the early 1960s were a particularly blatant instance of judicial activism. The Constitution neither mandates nor prohibits prayer in the schools. What the Constitution says about school prayer is absolutely nothing. For almost two centuries nobody thought that school prayer was a constitutional question. It was up to local communities and their school boards. (Some scholars claim that a fairly small percentage of public schools actually had such prayer.) That is the way it should be again. Those who claim that the American people are not capable of deciding the question in a civil and mutually respectful manner reveal an unseemly contempt for the democratic process. Our point, however, is that what the Constitution does not say is unconstitutional is not unconstitution al. The Constitution does not say that prayer in the public schools is unconstitutional, therefore it is not unconstitutional. One may argue that school prayer is unfair, divisive, mischievous, or just plain dumb. But it is not unconstitutional, and apparently it will take an amendment to make that clear. The second reason for an amendment is that it will challenge the judicial advancement of the pernicious ideology of the naked public square, of American public life denuded of religion and religiously grounded values. Whatever else one may think of the school prayer decisions of the 1960s, they sent a powerful message that ours is a secular society, and that a secular society is one in which religion must be expunged from any sphere that is designated as public. Combine that with the notion that public is a synonym for governmental and the conclusion is inescapable that religion must retreat wherever government advances-and government advances almost everywhere. This has been the unhappy pattern of more than thirty years. An amendment can check that pattern and perhaps, in due course, reverse it. The third reason for an amendment, closely connected to the first two, is that the incoherence of church-state jurisprudence over the last three decades is tied up with the school prayer decisions. Many, if not most, of the justices of the Supreme Court in the last decade have at one time or another publicly admitted that the Court has gotten itself into a brier patch of confusion and self-contradiction when it comes to the religion clause of the First Amendment. In our view, the Court's decisions have created a situation in which the no establishment provision of the religion clause has increasingly undercut the free exercise provision, even though the free exercise of religion is manifestly the purpose of the religion clause. A simple design won’t distract from your CTA. Keep the CTA short and straightforward so that those that receive your emails will immediately take action.
